Street artist Banksy has revealed his latest work in north-east London, depicting two pelicans fishing above a fish and chip shop. This image marks the fifth Banksy piece confirmed as his this week. The others include a goat in Kew, two elephants touching trunks in Chelsea (which was later defaced with stripes), three monkeys hanging from a bridge in Brick Lane, and a howling wolf on a satellite dish in Peckham (which was believed to have been stolen within hours of appearing).
Residents have expressed excitement at Banksy’s latest piece. One local noted that the choice of Bonners Fish Bar was significant, being an icon of the local area and well-loved by residents. Another resident, who spotted news of the art on social media, quickly took her children to see the artwork, as they were only a few doors away.
The Bristol-based artist’s Instagram account included an image of the silhouette of a wolf howling on a satellite dish in Rye Lane, with a video later appearing to show the artwork being removed and taken down the road. A spokesperson for Banksy reported that they “believe” the artwork was stolen. Metropolitan Police have confirmed that reports of a “stolen satellite dish containing artwork” have been made, but no arrests have been made.
It is suggested that Banksy will continue to produce artworks in the coming days. His works have long been a source of fascination to the public, with the artist managing to remain anonymous despite producing works of considerable value. The discovery of new works always generates considerable excitement among fans and non-fans alike, particularly in the local neighbourhoods where the art appears.
