Norwegian artist, Girl In Red, has performed a guitar-heavy version of Billie Eilish’s track “Lunch” on Triple J’s Like a Version series. The provocative song is from Eilish’s new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. Speaking about why she chose the song, Girl In Red explained: “I think for me, what drew me to the song is it’s just very different from her other songs, and I thought it was cool of her to be a little bit more, I dunno, naughty and a little bit more sexual, I guess.”
Ulven, aka Girl In Red, revealed her love for Eilish in an interview with NME in 2021. At that time, she felt her chances of ever collaborating with Eilish were far-fetched. However, at Coachella 2022, Eilish surprised her by presenting her with a Spellemann Award, often referred to as a Norwegian Grammy, telling a shocked Girl In Red, “You have won the Spellemann… Album Of The Year!”.
Girl In Red’s second full-length album ‘I’m Doing It Again Baby!’ was released earlier this year. However, in a three-star review, NME said, “There’s not much to chew on for the majority of the record, as Girl In Red plays it safe…the majority of the record sees her sitting safely within the parameters of her previous sound…It’s a pristine pop record that takes few risks and leaves little room for error – though it might be more interesting if it did.”
Despite mixed reviews, the openly queer 22-year-old has carved a space in music as an advocate for the LGBTQ community. Girl In Red’s songs often explore queer love, with her androgynous appearance adding to her appeal as a leading voice among a new wave of LGBTQ representation in music
