Three good things: designs born out of love

Inspirational designs are being created by inventors who are motivated by a loved one. Their individual struggles are being translated into innovative solutions. Graduates and mothers have crafted products to support people with disabilities, children, caregivers and families. Rather than seeing a void in the market, they created solutions to help those that they care about. Aspiring to make the world a better place and to deliver positive change, they’ve started small with a dream and a product, and are now taking their ideas to massive audiences.

Sean Guyett took his love for Ora Hambleton and combined it with magnetism to create a walking stick for disabled people, after finding that the standard stick would no doubt fall off with public transport. Rather than settle with that fate, he took it upon himself to empower mobility aids and developed Ida, a magnetic attachment the size of a palm which fastens the walking stick to the user’s hip. Its magnetic pads are secured onto clothing, enabling its users to have both hands free.

Zoë Chapman, who grew irritated with the lack of efficient eco-toilets for travelers, established her own. Called the Whizzer, rather than using bulky travel potties or the cardboard cups her child was using, Chapman created a leak-proof and sleek portable eco-toilet. This product came to light from looking after her terminally ill father and caring for her grandfather who experienced prostate enlargement. Additionally, those with bladder issues can use it, as can neurodiverse children who face sensory overload when using public toilets.

Deborah Ajaja, first-time mother, dove into action when she could not find any milestone cards depicting babies’ skin colors or cultural differences. She then created Colour Celebrations, which provide diverse lines of greeting cards, dolls, height charts and t-shirts, celebrating heritage, diversity, and culture.

The dedication of these individuals empowers people to have hope that overcoming challenges is possible. Fuelled by the love of their family, their results are not only inspirational, but they provide valuable solutions for everyday life
