Lauryn Hill has spoken out about the cancellation of Fugees’ North American tour, apologizing to disappointed fans. In a statement posted on Instagram, Hill blamed sensationalist media coverage for low ticket sales and revealed that no one is more upset about the news than she is. The 18-date ‘Miseducation Anniversary Tour’ was canceled by Ticketmaster without providing a clear reason three days before it was to begin in Tampa, Florida. Hill has been known to cancel and reschedule shows, to the dismay of fans who expect better from an artist of her stature.
Hill admitted that the decision to cancel the tour was painful and difficult to make. She expressed her gratitude to fans who appreciate and support her art, emphasizing the profound exchange of energy and emotion that takes place during live performances. She also reaffirmed her commitment to push through all kinds of resistance to put together meaningful experiences for her fans. Despite her best intentions, Hill’s frequent cancellations and rescheduling of the tour have sparked disappointment amongst fans, one of whom wrote that it is disheartening to be a fan of Lauryn Hill.
Initially announced in 2021 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group’s album ‘The Score,’ the reunion tour had to be postponed due to COVID after just one show in 2022. When the dates were eventually picked up again last year, with the tour re-framed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hill’s solo album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ the shows were generally a success. Nevertheless, Hill had to pull out of the remaining dates part-way through the tour due to vocal strain. Although the European leg of the tour is still scheduled to go ahead as planned, Hill’s unpredictable track record may discourage fans from purchasing tickets.
It remains unclear whether Hill will reschedule the North American dates or return to the touring scene. Fans will have to wait and see whether this cancellation marks the end of Hill’s live performances or whether she will rise to the challenge and deliver another memorable tour
