The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has revealed that a criminal investigation into the conduct of police officers at Manchester Airport has been extended to involve a second Greater Manchester Police officer for alleged assault. Muhammad Fahir Amaaz was caught on camera being kicked by a firearms officer whilst lying on the floor at Terminal 2. The incident occurred on July 23, 2020, after Mr. Amaaz and his brother were arrested following an altercation with police officers. A video of the incident went viral, sparking protests in Rochdale and Manchester City Centre.

On July 26, 2020, the IOPC stated that a police constable was under investigation for criminal misconduct regarding the incident. A further complaint was filed by the Greater Manchester force on Monday, leading to the second officer’s inclusion in the investigation. The complaint from one of the people involved details multiple allegations, prompting an investigation into potential gross misconduct.

The GMP condemned the incident and stated it was “fully committed to supporting” an independent investigation by the police watchdog into the two police officers’ conduct. The GMP has previously claimed that when firearms officers attempted to make an arrest at Terminal 2, they were subjected to a “violent attack,” and their weapons were nearly taken, leading to the police officers’ actions.

Four men, including the two brothers, were arrested for assault and affray, and they are currently on police bail. In addition, lawyers representing Mr. Amaaz’s family recently levelled further allegations of mistreatment towards their client. Mr. Amaaz’s family, from Rochdale, claimed their mother suffered racial abuse when flying from Doha to Manchester, leading to an altercation between the brothers and another man, prompting the police involvement, which ultimately led to the kicking incident.

GMP emphasized that they understood public concern and interest over the series of events at the airport and was making progress investigating alleged criminal offenses and the behavior of both the officers and the public. They have requested that the public provides support while they carry out a thorough investigation into the matter
