A senior doctor’s family is searching for him, after he had an accident while hiking in the Pyrenees mountains in France. Tom Doherty, who is 67 years old, is from St Albans in Hertfordshire and was travelling and camping by himself in southern France. The exact location where he fell is unknown, but it occurred on Tuesday around 4 pm BST. Despite the severity of his fall, Mr Doherty managed to send two WhatsApp messages back home to alert his family in the UK.

Mr Doherty’s car has since been found adjacent to the Col d’Escots hiking trail in the Ariege region near Cirque de Gerac. His family remains hopeful and is waiting for further news regarding his condition. At present, the extent of the injuries he has suffered is unknown. In a bid to find him, members of his family have flown out to France to join the search and rescue effort.

Mr Doherty is a retired doctor who previously worked as a consultant at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London. His son, Ricardo Zamora, expressed his gratitude to the French rescue teams, and said his family was hopeful and made a plea to anyone who may have information that could aid the search, to come forward.

At such a difficult time, family and friends will hold on to hope that Mr Doherty is found safely, and there is an ongoing search for him by all rescue teams on the scene
