Australian Indigenous multihyphenate Nooky almost retired from a music career 18 months ago, feeling that he had achieved success in other areas such as radio hosting with Blak Out and his social enterprise We Are Warriors. However, when rapper Dallas Woods called for a collaboration, Nooky was happy to oblige, leading to the formation of 3% with the addition of singer Angus Field. Their debut album ‘Kill the Dead’, released on 9 August, features all-guns-blazing hip-hop that speaks directly and passionately about issues affecting Aboriginal people in Australia such as institutionalised racism and police brutality.
3% debuted last year with the single ‘Our People’, which addressed the disproportionate incarceration of Indigenous people in Australia, some as young as 10 years old. The trio wanted their album to reflect their experiences as Indigenous men, which is evident in songs like ‘Land Back’ as well as the fun and playful ‘Sleazy Steezy Cool’ featuring pop singer Tia Gostelow.
Though it was originally meant to be a few collaborative sessions, 3%’s music made Nooky feel like he was freestyling in the backstreets again, which he said brought back his lost passion. The group has been receiving both national and international attention, with upcoming performances at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. They hope their music will help raise awareness about Indigenous sovereignty and human rights.
As both reparation and commentary on the Australia Day controversy, 3% performed to hundreds in Sydney on 26 January before playing to thousands in the city’s Tumbalong Park as part of Vivid, Australia’s festival of lights, music and ideas. As an indigenous Australian, this day of mourning resonates with me deeply.
