A series of anti-racist demonstrations have swept across England on Wednesday, as a response to reports of plans for anti-immigrant protests in various parts of the country. Crowds gathered in towns and cities across England in largely peaceful protests. Thousands of police officers were deployed on the streets to maintain order. The demonstrations come as tensions soar in England following the death of George Floyd in the US.

Images taken during the protests show crowds of demonstrators in multiple locations, including Walthamstow in northeast London and Brentford in West London, where one woman held a sign denouncing hatred in society. Some parts of England, including Southend, had boarded up windows in preparation for more unrest. Meanwhile, in Newcastle, a nine-year-old boy named Hassan Boston Khan tried on a police officer’s helmet after giving them water ahead of an anti-immigration protest.

The protests come amid heightened fears that far-right groups may launch anti-immigrant attacks in the country in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. While there were reports of small groups of young men with covered faces heading towards Bristol city centre, there were no serious incidents of violence. However, in Hampshire, a group of up to 200 anti-immigration protesters blocked a major road in Portsmouth, chanting “save our kids”. Scenes also boiled over in Chatham, where Union Jacks were waved and two people were arrested as scuffles broke out with Kent Police.
