The horror-thriller film “Cuckoo” has received rave reviews, with many critics lauding Hunter Schafer’s “absolutely sensational” lead performance. Schafer portrays Gretchen, in the movie. She moves to the German Alps to reside with her father. The movie premiered in the Berlin International Film Festival in February and is scheduled to be in theaters beginning Friday, August 9th.
The movie has a strong 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising Tilman Singer’s “inventive flair.” Of particular note is Schafer’s captivating lead performance. Her rendition has been widely praised by critics, who have noted her ability to carry the film. Slashfilm lauded Schafer, noting that her performance was the “anchor in this chaotic storm” and that she “commands every scene.” The Guardian and Screen Daily also gave kudos to Schafer’s performance in their reviews.
Schafer, who broke through with her performance as transgender high schooler Jules Vaughn in hit HBO series Euphoria, expressed that she no longer wanted to play transgender roles in an interview back in April. According to the actress, she has been offered numerous trans roles, but she no longer wants to talk about her experience. She wants to move on. However, Schafer recognizes that she is one of the most famous trans people in the media, and in some ways, believes that she should be a spokesperson for the community. At the same time, the actress feels that continuing to play trans roles may not be the most effective way to help the community.
