UK disorder: Thousands of counter-protesters rally after riots

After a week of anti-immigrant rioting and disorder, thousands of anti-racism protesters rallied in various cities and towns across England. These gatherings diffused most parts of the violence with counter-protesters, chanting “refugees are welcome here” being the bulk of the crowds. The police had anticipated further violence with over 100 events anticipated and thousands of officers being deployed. Rather, only a handful of arrests were made, and the demonstrations largely passed off peacefully across most parts of England.

The riots were sparked by misinformation online that the suspect in the fatal stabbing of three little girls in Southport on July 29 was a Muslim asylum seeker. During the chaos, mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers were targeted, with some shops burnt out and looted. Shop owners had boarded up their windows and closed early on Wednesday across England in anticipation of further violence. There were instructions given to immigration lawyers to work from home after lists of solicitors’ firms and advice agencies were shared in chat groups as possible targets.

Despite the anticipation of further violence, only a few protests ended with arrests, and most demonstrations took place peacefully. Over 400 arrests have been made in connection to the riots, with over 140 people being charged and some already having been convicted and sentenced. Kings Charles has been kept daily updated about the public disorder throughout England. Riot police are also expected to remain on standby for the foreseeable future, including through the coming weekend and beyond
