Actress Daisy Ridley recently spoke about her recent diagnosis of Graves disease, an autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to attack the thyroid gland, leading to an overproduction of thyroid hormones. Symptoms can include weight loss, tremors, fatigue, and a racing heartbeat. Ridley first noticed symptoms while filming the thriller Magpie and believed they were due to the stress of her role. However, she was later referred to an endocrinologist and officially diagnosed in September.
Ridley’s doctor explained that Graves disease can make people feel “tired but wired,” due to the quick functioning of the body. To manage her condition, Ridley has been taking medication and using other methods such as infrared saunas, cryotherapy, massages, acupuncture, and a reduced-gluten diet. She added that cutting down on gluten generally makes her feel better.
Earlier this year, Ridley also spoke publicly about how the stress of her role in Star Wars impacted her health, leading to stomach ulcers. She explained that she had never traveled so frequently or done press junkets before and that her body deals with stress physically. The anxiety of traveling and being recognized by fans led to what she described as a “leaky gut” that physically manifested as stomach ulcers.
In January, it was announced that Ridley would reprise her role as Rey in a new Star Wars movie. The film is set several years after The Rise of Skywalker and will be directed by Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
