‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ director says Henry Cavill was “sick to the stomach” after smoking cigars for cameo

Henry Cavill, who made a brief cameo appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine as Wolverine variant “the Cavillrine,” felt sick to his stomach for “eight hours straight” after incessantly smoking cigars during the shoot, according to director Shawn Levy. Most of the variants in the Marvel movie are played by Hugh Jackman, the longtime Wolverine star, but one of them is played by a cigar-smoking Cavill, who is not only muscular but also keeps the cigar lit in his mouth throughout the shoot day. Levy revealed that after the shoot, he heard that Cavill was feeling unwell because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours, but he never once wavered during the shoot.

The cameo appearance was filmed just after the announcement that Cavill would not be returning as Superman in James Gunn’s DC universe in December 2022. Levy said that given Deadpool’s constant conversation with culture, it felt like a great opportunity to cast Cavill in a part that he would excel in and to poke fun at the other comic-book-founded movie studio while playing with some self-awareness.

Aside from Cavill, Chris Evans also played a brief cameo as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, a role he played in Fantastic Four and its sequel. Chris Hemsworth also had a cameo as Thor, where he appeared in a possible future scenario attending to a dying Deadpool. Deadpool is known for its sarky, time-skipping superhero send-up, but it also became a hit because of Ryan Reynolds’ comedic performance as the breakout character.
