Confirmation has been given that a second season of the anime show Kaiju No. 8 is to be released in 2025. The programme, produced by Production I.G. and headlined by Naoya Matsumoto, aired the first of its twelve episodes in April of this year. Within the show, lead character Kafka Hibino discovered the ability to transform into a kaiju after consuming an infective organism. A short trailer for the new season has been released, although no details regarding western screenings have been disclosed thus far. Japanese cinemas are set to broadcast a newly-originated instalment entitled Hoshina’s Day Off in conjunction with a compilation of season one.
The debut season of the programme was accompanied by an official summary: “With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters. Enter the Japan Defense Force, a military organisation tasked with the neutralisation of kaiju. Kafka Hibino, a kaiju-corpse cleanup man, has always dreamed of joining the force. But when he gets another shot at achieving his childhood dream, he undergoes an unexpected transformation. How can he fight kaiju now that he’s become one himself?!” Information concerning season two is limited, but it has been confirmed that Koki Uchiyama will be joining the ensemble in his role as Gen Harumi. The show has extended into numerous forms of merchandise, including a novelisation, two manga spin-offs and a video game. As of last month, over 15 million copies of the manga have been sold.
The runaway success of Kaiju No. 8 has delighted fans and validated Production I.G’s investment into the project. Although the series has been short thus far, the overwhelming popularity that it has amassed bodes well for the future reception of the upcoming second season. The programme’s numerous forms of successful transmedia also present promising opportunities for the series to extend beyond its current television format. One can only hope that the new season able to exceed its predecessor’s critical and commercial acclaim.
It is highly likely that there will be a high level of anticipation surrounding the programming as more details regarding its release continue to emerge.
