Annie Clark, professionally known as St. Vincent, has named John Mayer’s 2004 hit ‘Daughters’ as the worst song ever written. Clark discussed the ten songs that changed her life in a recent interview with Kerrang!. The musician said Mayer’s song was “just so hideously sexist but it pretends to be a love song, but it’s really, really retrograde and really sexist.” She added that the song was “so deeply misogynistic, which would be fine if you owned that, but it pretends like it’s sweet.”
Mayer’s song warns fathers that if they treat their daughters badly, they will create issues for the men those daughters will go on to date. “Fathers, be good to your daughters/ Daughters will love like you do/Girls become lovers who turn into mothers/So mothers, be good to your daughters too,” he sings in the chorus. He later sings: “Boys will be strong/And boys soldier on/But boys would be gone without warmth from/A woman’s good, good heart.”
St. Vincent is currently on her ‘All Born Screaming’ tour, which began in London’s Royal Albert Hall at the start of June. Her latest album, which shares the tour’s name, was released in April. Tickets for the upcoming shows are available for purchase from Ticketmaster. She will play in several cities throughout Europe, including Barcelona and Milan in October.
St. Vincent’s live performances have been praised for being both powerful and energetic. NME reviewed her recent concert at the Royal Albert Hall, giving it four stars. The review praised Clark as someone who “wields her guitar like a weapon and attacks the microphone with a restless urgency.” The reviewer added that “with music this charged, there’s simply no standing on the sidelines.
