Andrew Flintoff reveals 'anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks' of Top Gear crash

Former English cricketer, Andrew Flintoff, has spoken publicly for the first time about his struggle with anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks, following a high-speed car accident he was involved in whilst filming Top Gear in December 2022. Flintoff sustained serious facial injuries in the crash, a subject he discusses in the second series of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams, which will begin on BBC One on 13 August. The show features Flintoff’s return to his hometown of Preston, where he creates a cricket team of teenagers as a way to get back into coaching.

In the documentary, Flintoff talks about the accident, which occurred 12 weeks before the team’s scheduled tour of India. A week and a half after the accident, Flintoff took footage of himself on his mobile phone, which revealed the initial extent of his facial injuries. Flintoff recalls the severity of the accident and says he “should not be here with what happened”, and his life is now drastically different. “I’m different to what I was. It’s something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life. Better? No, different.”

Flintoff’s return to the cricket world came in September 2023 when he coached the England White-ball team before being appointed the head coach of Northern Superchargers for The Hundred. Flintoff has found success in coaching, where he says that “ultimately, you’re coaching people, not players,” and Flintoff believes he found a confidence in India that had been lacking in recent times. Flintoff’s two sons have followed in their father’s footsteps and are now professional cricket players, with Rocky becoming Lancashire’s youngest ever first-team player.

Flintoff’s car accident occurred while filming Top Gear in late 2022, leading to compensation from the BBC, and Flintoff has since revealed the impact the accident had on him. He has struggled with anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks, and with the accident ultimately changing his life forever, Flintoff is determined to keep going, with his return to cricket through coaching helping him find a new focus
