Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that the upcoming sequel to Joker could have been set “in space.” The sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is set to release on October 2nd with Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga taking on the roles of Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s lover and partner-in-crime.
Phoenix explained that he felt curious about going further with his character and that he had a fascination for where his character could end up. In an interview with Empire, Phoenix jokingly suggested that the Joker could be put in different situations. He even went as far as to mock up posters of classic movies like Rosemary’s Baby and The Godfather with Joker inserted into them.
Folie à Deux takes an unusual departure from its predecessor in that it is a musical. It has been described as a “mostly jukebox musical” and will feature at least 15 well-known songs with one named as ‘That’s Entertainment’, from the 1953 Judy Garland musical, The Band Wagon. Hildur Guðnadóttir, notorious for being the composer of the first film’s score, has also promised that the sequel will feature “a lot of music.”
The film will star Steve Coogan, Zazie Beetz from Atlanta, Catherine Keener from Being John Malkovich and Brendan Gleeson from The Banshees of Inisherin. Phoenix won an Oscar for his leading role in Joker, which also won Best Original Score. Gaga, for her part, was so impressed when she first heard Phoenix singing that she reportedly spat out her coffee
