The Action! program run by the Liverpool City Council Film Office has helped more than 400 people start their careers in TV and film. In the first six months, 130 entrants have found paid work, with various roles on productions shot in the Liverpool City Region. 108 people have joined free introductory training courses to help prepare for work in the industry. Another 191 have signed up to receive learning support and training opportunities over the next two years.
Since launching in January, Action! has run six free introductory training courses, including courses on location sourcing, makeup and hair, sound departments, the role of assistant directors, and the production office. The program has also hosted a masterclass with Emma Pill, supervising location manager for films like Inception and Captain America: The First Avenger. A Q&A session with Tony Schumacher, creator of The Responder, was also popular.
Upcoming training in areas like camera, lighting, grip, special effects makeup and costume departments is also planned. Action! members will have access to CV advice, workshops, and training courses to improve their soft skills and raise their proficiency with spreadsheets, documents, and equipment commonly used in the industry.
Action! has become possible thanks to £2.3m of funding via the BFI National Lottery, awarded to Screen Alliance North. A new skills cluster partnership between Liverpool Film Office, North East Screen, Screen Manchester, and Screen Yorkshire, the partnership aims to make the screen sector more accessible and representative and create a skilled workforce across the North of England by 2026. Anyone aged 18 or above living in the Liverpool City Region and not studying higher or further education can sign up for free
