Despite not all demonstrations becoming violent, instances of damage to buildings, cars set ablaze and numerous clashes have been reported. In the city of Hull, protestors gathered outside of a hotel where asylum seekers reside, chanting “stop the boats.”
The source of this unrest stems from misinformation that has been circulating since the fatal stabbing of three young girls this past Monday in Southport. Anti-immigrant sentiment has been on the rise in response to the tragedy, with many individuals expressing the belief that immigrants are responsible for an increase in crime within the country.
Despite vocal pushback from those who feel that immigrants are being unfairly targeted and scapegoated for wider societal issues, there remains substantial support for anti-immigration rhetoric in many sectors of society.
