Tattoos have been a form of self-expression for thousands of years, but their popularity has recently surged as more people turn to body art to overcome insecurities and reclaim their bodies. While stereotypes of tattoos being associated with “inked criminals” and “the unemployed” may have once existed, body art has now gone mainstream, with professionals and celebrities proudly displaying their designs.
Despite their prevalence, tattoos often provide a glimpse into the psyche of the wearer. For many, getting a tattoo is a way to “reclaim” their bodies and overcome trauma, negative body-image issues, or insecurities by transforming their skin into art. Löiz Machado Gias Dominguez, a tattoo artist at No Regrets studio in Bristol, has seen many clients seek out “ink therapy” as a way to boost their confidence.
However, getting a tattoo to deal with self-esteem issues is not a simple fix in the long run. Psychotherapist Aleksandra Pamphlett warns that tattoos should not become an avoidance strategy and stresses the importance of addressing the underlying psychological issues. Despite this, Pamphlett acknowledges that many of her clients use tattoos to “take back power” after battling chronic illness, mental health struggles, or trauma in their past.
Kieran Moulton, a PhD student at the University of the West of England, has conducted studies into tattooing as a method of “camouflaging or decorating” scars, finding that getting a tattoo can help individuals take back control of their bodies after scar-inducing experiences. Additionally, tattoos have become a form of “ink therapy” for many people who cover their body’s invisible scars with meaningful designs to take ownership of their bodies.
Tattoos have proven to be a powerful tool of self-expression and have helped many people overcome negative body-image issues. While a tattoo may mask physical imperfections, it is important to remember that long-term victory in this area can only be achieved through addressing psychological struggles
