M Night Shyamalan’s new thriller ‘Trap’ receives mixed reviews: “Awkward choices and laughable moments”

M Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller film, Trap, has been met with mixed reviews from critics. The movie follows the story of a man named Josh Hartnett and his teenage daughter Ariel Donoghue as they attend a pop concert together, only to find out that the event has been set up to catch a serial killer. However, it is revealed that the serial killer is actually Hartnett’s character.

As of writing, Trap has received a score of 50% on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. The Hollywood Reporter described the film as “moderately entertaining” but noted that it struggled to maintain momentum. Variety criticised the movie’s twists, calling them “contrived” and “fundamentally farfetched”. Collider praised glimpses of Shyamalan’s former brilliance but ultimately criticised awkward choices and laughable moments.

Despite the varied reaction, The Wrap called it one of Shyamalan’s “best thrillers”. The Daily Beast praised the movie’s star Josh Hartnett for his performance as a father overcoming fiendishness.

Shyamalan previously described Trap as a cross between The Silence of the Lambs and a Taylor Swift concert. The movie has already been released in the US but will be released in the UK on 9 August
