British indie icons The Libertines recently took to the stage for a headline slot at the On The Beach 2024 festival in Brighton, where they were joined by an array of special guests including Tim Burgess of The Charlatans. Burgess joined the band on stage during their final song of the night, a rendition of their biggest hit ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun’. The band also performed tracks from their latest album, ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’.
The Libertines and Burgess have a long history of collaboration, having formed an English rock supergroup called The Chavs with Andy Burrows of Razorlight in 2004. They have also worked together on numerous live shows, covering various Libertines songs. In 2007, Burgess officiated at the marriage of Libertines frontman Carl Barat and his then-girlfriend.
The release of ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ marks the long-awaited follow-up to ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’, released in 2015. The band first announced the project in October 2023 with the lead single ‘Run Run Run’. Speaking about the album, Doherty and Barat said, “All we want to do is write beautiful songs. That’s what we’ve always wanted to do, but we got distracted – mostly by ourselves… This is the album we’re proud of.”
NME gave ‘…Eastern Esplanade’ a four-star rating and described it as a more stable and safer version of The Libertines. The album helped the band reach the top of the UK Albums Charts for the first time in over two decades.
The Libertines’ performance at On The Beach 2024 was part of a two-weekend festival held on Brighton Beach, with The Kooks performing the previous weekend. The festival was organised in association with Radio X.
The Libertines have a close friendship with Burgess and have collaborated with him on various occasions in the past, cementing their relationship in the history of British indie rock
