Chicago-based band Brigitte Calls Me Baby’s debut album, ‘The Future Is Our Way Out’, channels nostalgia for the 1950s and 60s with contemporary perspectives. Frontman Wes Leavins cites a range of inspirations, including the film noir era, Brigitte Bardot and Morrissey. The title track is a standout, with Leavins providing lyrics in the style of the late Roy Orbison. In an interview with NME, Leavins said he hopes the band can find longevity through its music.
While the album has a subtle nostalgic tone throughout, it is not without surprises. ‘Impressively Average’ is a track full of driving guitar, similar to the sounds of the Vaccines and the Strokes, while ‘We Were Never Alone’ is a haunting, synth-heavy track reminiscent of Depeche Mode. On ‘Too Easy’, the sound slows down with more emphasis on emotive synths, drawing comparisons to fellow US retro revivalists Nation of Language.
Overall, Brigitte Calls Me Baby creates a unique sound and experience by revisiting creative sources from decades ago, without feeling tired or stale. Despite the plethora of influences, the band’s delivery is tailored perfectly to present its distinct touchstones in a fun and coherent way. ‘The Future Is Our Way Out’ is set to be released on August 2nd, 2024 by ATO Records
