Garbage have been forced to cancel their remaining 2024 shows following an injury to lead vocalist Shirley Manson. The news was announced via a statement on the band’s Instagram page. The post explained that Manson would require surgery and rehabilitation to treat the injury and that the decision to cancel was not taken lightly. In the statement, the band also confirmed that they would be back on the road by 2025.
Manson, who won the NME Icon Award in 2013 with Garbage, wrote in an Instagram caption that she was “crushed” by the situation, adding: “You know I would push through if I could.” Her fellow musicians offered messages of support, including the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Kathleen Hanna, Sharon van Etten, and Silversun Pickups. Manson’s injury is not the first that has occurred while the band was on tour. In 2016, she fell off a stage in Los Angeles and underwent hip replacement surgery last year to address the issue.
The band is set to release their eighth studio album in the near future. Manson previously confirmed to NME that the band has been busy recording, giving hints at what fans can expect after their 2021 album, No Gods No Masters, was well-received by critics. “Going into this next record, I feel a shift,” she said. “I’m trying to dampen my outrage. As a society, we’ve become so beaten down and broken-hearted. I’m trying to reach for something that’s a little bigger than me, because if I don’t, then I’m going to drown in my own dismay.”
The cancellation of shows in 2024 marks a significant blow for Garbage, who have been touring for over three decades. However, Manson’s health and recovery will remain the priority, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see her healthy and back on stage
