Indie rock musician Snail Mail, whose real name is Lindsey Jordan, has released a cover of The Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Tonight, Tonight’. Originally recorded for indie film ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ in January, the cover is now available through streaming services. Jordan makes her acting debut in the film, directed by Jane Schoenbrun, in which the song also appears on the official soundtrack.

In a statement, Jordan describes how the idea for recording the hit 1996 song came about from a handful of coincidences. She had originally arranged to play the song live on her ‘Valentine’ tour, prior to being offered the part in the film. Jordan had a tattoo of the man in the moon, a nod to the first ever science fiction film ‘A Trip to the Moon’ and The Smashing Pumpkins’ video for ‘Tonight, Tonight’. Whilst reading the script, Jordan discovered that the arch nemesis of the Pink Opaque was also inspired by the same image and she suggested to director Schoenbrun that the cover be used in the film.

The euphoric cover is a departure from Jordan’s usual angst ridden rock music. It is reminiscent of The Smashing Pumpkins’ original version, complete with strings and Jordan’s sweet vocals. The song’s upbeat tempo and dreamlike quality, underpinned by the intensity of the guitar and sweeping strings, add a touch of romance and nostalgia.

Snail Mail has been busy recently, performing with Weezer at their recent New York City show, where she joined the band onstage to perform two songs. Jordan has also covered Talking Heads’ 1983 classic ‘This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)’ with Mac DeMarco during her Valentine Fest residency in Baltimore. Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy covered Avril Lavigne‘s ‘I’m With You’ during a concert in Baltimore. In September last year, Snail Mail and Mac DeMarco shared a new song called ‘A Cuckhold’s Refrain’ attributed to a project called Peppermint Patty
