Craig Shakespeare: Former Leicester City boss dies aged 60

Craig Shakespeare, the former manager of Leicester City, has passed away at the age of 60. As of October 2023, Shakespeare was being treated for cancer. Over the course of his career, he also worked for a number of other football clubs, including West Brom, Hull, Everton, Watford, Aston Villa, and Norwich. He served as assistant boss for England in 2016 as well.

A statement issued on behalf of Shakespeare’s family announced his passing. According to the League Managers’ Association, Shakespeare “passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family.” Though he had accomplished much in his career as both a player and a coach, above all else, he was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle to those who knew him best.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time and thanked everyone who sent prayers and well-wishes over the past few months. Shakespeare had begun his career with Leicester City as Claudio Ranieri’s assistant in the 2015-2016 season, when the team won the Premier League in one of football’s most legendary stories. He became the manager in February 2017 after Ranieri left but was fired in October. However, Shakespeare continued to assist the club under Dean Smith in April 2023, though he left not long after their relegation from the Premier League. Shakespeare’s playing career was as a midfielder for various teams, including Walsall, Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Telford, and Hednesford.

The football world has lost one of its own with Shakespeare’s passing. But to those who knew him personally, he will be remembered as a loving family man who was proud of his footballing accomplishments. He will no doubt be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him
