Uri Geller, the famed television personality, has announced his purchase of John Lennon’s iconic sunglasses at auction for £40,000. The blue-tinted spectacles were one of many items of Beatles memorabilia being auctioned off at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey on July 31st.
Geller, an illusionist known for bending spoons, spoke to the BBC declaring his elation at the purchase. The 77-year-old stated that he and Lennon were “very good friends” during their time together in New York in the 1970s, and he plans to display the glasses at his museum in Tel Aviv, Israel, where he also owns a lock of Lennon’s hair and a sketch of a UFO that he supposedly made.
The sunglasses were given to a man named Michael in Surrey as a birthday present by Lennon in 1968 and were only expected to fetch around £3,000 at auction. Geller would have gone as high as £500,000 for the iconic pair of glasses, claiming that “glasses are a passage into our soul, into our psyche.”
In addition to the glasses, a collection of 33 photographs of the Beatles was also auctioned, featuring shots of Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and producer George Martin on the day of the photoshoot for the Abbey Road album cover. The photographs were estimated to sell for between £200 and £300
