Liverpool City Council leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, has expressed his grief and condolences for the Southport community following the tragic events of Monday. Three children lost their lives while others have been seriously injured at a dance studio in Southport. Robinson stated that Liverpool’s civic buildings would lower their flags to half-mast as a mark of respect. Deputy Leader, Cllr Ruth Bennett, and Lord Mayor, Cllr Richard Kemp, represented Liverpool at the moving vigil ceremony.

Robinson emphasized how much the Southport community is being felt by the Liverpool City Region. Many citizens had fond memories of the town while they visited it with their own children or during their childhood. The city leader said that Liverpool would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its neighboring town during this dark and painful period. Robinson highlighted Mayor Steve Rotheram, Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell, and Patrick Hurley, the newly elected MP for the region, as the representatives to stand alongside Southport.

Robinson also addressed the disrespectful and disruptive attempts of outsiders to exploit the situation and increase community tension. He criticized the offenders for sickening scenes outside a mosque, targeting the Muslim community. Robinson praised Merseyside Police for their level of dedication to solving the case, despite dozens of officers being assaulted and injured. He was reassured that the disgraceful scenes brought out the true face of the region. The people worked together this morning to clean up the damage just as they had done following the 2011 Liverpool riots.

In conclusion, the Liverpool city leader acknowledged the testing time and emphasized the importance of standing together. He requested that justice be done for those who lost their lives and were injured. Furthermore, the Community Foundation for Merseyside, in partnership with Sefton Council and Sefton CVS, launched an urgent fundraising campaign for all those affected by the incident, and anyone can donate to the #SouthportStrongTogetherAppeal
