The US women’s gymnastics team, featuring Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey, have celebrated their Olympic victory by lip-syncing to Kanye West’s famous Grammy speech. The quartet won the gold medal in the women’s artistic team all-around event in Paris on July 30, holding off the challenge of Italy and Brazil who took silver and bronze respectively. This was a particularly sweet victory for Biles who had to withdraw from the last Summer Olympics after suffering from mental health challenges.
The team celebrated their win by mouthing along to the words uttered by Kanye at the 2005 Grammy Awards when he won Best Rap Album for ‘The College Dropout’. In a clip posted to Lee’s Instagram, they excitedly lip-synced, “Everybody want to know what I would do if I didn’t win”, with all four finishing the sentence with a punchline: “I guess we’ll never know”. Beyoncé, who recently released her new album ‘Cowboy Carter’, also introduced several high-profile athletes, including Biles, in a promotional video for the US Olympic team.
The Paris Olympics commenced on July 26 with a divisive opening ceremony that included performances from Celine Dion, a pre-recorded Lady Gaga and a history-making Gojira. Taylor Swift also recently reacted to her track ‘…Ready For It?’ being used in an NBC advert for the Olympics. As the Games continue, it remains to be seen what other exciting moments and victories will emerge from the many countries and sports represented at the event.
Despite everything, the US women’s gymnastics team’s celebratory moment offers a sense of hope for viewers, as these Olympics occur amidst a particularly challenging global context. As we continue to watch and cheer these athletes on, it’s worth remembering the hard work, dedication and years of training that went into making these moments possible. Congratulations to the team
