At Glastonbury festival last month, Irish rap group Kneecap had the pleasure of meeting former Oasis member Noel Gallagher, after he witnessed one of their performances. Speaking to NME backstage at Mad Cool festival this month, Kneecap’s DJ Próvaí spoke about how he always wanted to meet Gallagher, jesting that he’d been a massive Blur fan his whole life. He continued by paying tribute to Gallagher’s Irish heritage and stated that he was very down to earth. Gallagher allegedly said he was a massive fan and came backstage for a hug and a chat. The two parties had a lovely time getting to know each other.
Bandmate Móglaí Bap added to the conversation by commending the abundance of Irish music showcased at Glastonbury this year. She explained that it was good to see “authentic, original Irish music being played at Glastonbury” and praised acts such as Lankum, The Mary Wallopers, Kojaque, and Fontaines D.C. She disclosed that Irish music appears to be having a moment of late and believes this is due to many acts playing music that appeals to Irish people instead of making music just for export. Kneecap was also part of this year’s lineup, and both of their performances went well.
Kneecap also discussed the imminent release of their self-titled movie, which sees them play themselves alongside Michael Fassbender, who is cast as Bap’s exiled IRA member father. Rich Peppiatt directed the film, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
