Hozier performed a cover of The Band’s ‘The Weight’ at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island last week. The singer-songwriter was joined at Fort Adams State Park by Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, The Lumineers, Nathaniel Rateliff, Allison Russell, Madison Cunningham and others for the live rendition of the 1968 track towards the end of his headline set. In a fan-shot video shared on social media, Hozier can be seen and heard alongside his guests in an electric performance.

Following the collaboration, Joan Baez sang her protest song ‘We Shall Overcome’ with Hozier, Russell, Rateliff and other artists like William Prince and Kai Kater. The entire performance on that day was a tribute to the legendary Newport Folk Festival, which has hosted more than just music events for over six decades. Hozier shared a professional video captured at the event on social media, saying how grateful he was for the opportunity to be reminded of everything that the Newport Folk Fest offers through its legacy.

Hozier and Mavis Staples previously worked together on his second album ‘Wasteland, Baby!’ in 2019. The two artists also performed together on stage at that year’s edition of the Newport Folk Festival. Hozier has also previewed a new upcoming song called ‘July’ online, confirmed that a new EP is “coming soon,” following on from his previous four-track collection Unheard, which was released in March and features a team-up with Allison Russell. Hozier’s latest studio album Unreal Unearth dropped in August 2020, earning the Irish musician his first UK Number One album. In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Hozier not only navigates different genres on ‘Unreal Unearth,’ but chooses between moments of sparseness, like the minimalist ‘To Someone From A Warm Climate (Uiscefhuarithe)’ while also making space for expansive tracks.”

Without a doubt, Hozier kept the audience entertained throughout his performance, and the guests that joined him on stage made it an unforgettable experience for attendees
