Katy Perry is set to be the headline performer at the 2024 Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final, which will take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 28. The infamous singer, who has faced criticism over her recent music collaboration, will entertain a crowd of 100,000 people during the pre-game entertainment. In a statement shared on Instagram, Perry expressed her excitement about being back in Australia to perform in front of the world’s best and loudest fans.
Apart from Katy Perry, other legendary artists like Robbie Williams and KISS have headlined the grand final in previous years. In 2022, Robbie Williams paid tribute to John Farnham, who was undergoing treatment for a tumour at the time. The remaining performers for 2024’s grand final will be announced closer to the event.
Despite her recent comeback, which has had a fair share of controversies, Perry is looking forward to gracing the AFL Grand Final stage with her performance. The singer came under fire when fans noticed Dr Luke’s name listed as a co-producer on her recent single ‘Woman’s World.’ Dr Luke has been accused of emotional abuse and sexual assault in a decade-long lawsuit by singer Kesha. Perry has collaborated with the producer before.
Following the revelation that Perry was working with Dr Luke again, Kesha issued a response via Twitter, tweeting “lol.” Perry has also been criticised for her music video for ‘Women’s World,’ which fans suggested was catering to the male gaze rather than challenging it, as the female empowerment-themed lyrics suggest. Perry, however, rebutted these claims, stating that the video was satirical.
‘Women’s World’ is the lead single from Perry’s upcoming album ‘143,’ set for release on September 20. Katy Perry last released an album in 2020, and ‘Smile’ received mixed reviews. Although it is unclear what Perry’s performance at the grand final will entail, fans can only hope that it lives up to the event’s iconic nature
