Video footage depicting the moments leading up to a police officer allegedly kicking and stamping on a man’s head at Manchester Airport has emerged. In the video, police officers appear to attempt to restrain one man before a second man intervenes, resulting in a fight breaking out. The officer involved in the incident has been suspended and is now subject to a criminal investigation for assault, in addition to a disciplinary notice for potential gross misconduct.
The incident took place on Tuesday night at a Terminal 2 car park when the officer, along with several colleagues, encountered a group of men who violently attacked them. It was not until a video surfaced online on Wednesday that the Management Team of Greater Manchester Police suspended the officer in question. Human rights lawyer, Aamer Anwar, told the BBC that there was “no justification” for such police behaviour.
Video analysis by the BBC Verify team of five social media videos suggests that the violent clash may not have stopped at the airport. One video appears to show one of the police officers attacking another man, with another officer pepper-spraying bystanders filming the encounter. The newest footage is not included in the Verify coverage, and the source of the new video has not been independently verified.
