Military convoy crash closes A34 dual carriageway

The A34, which straddles the Berkshire-Hampshire border near Newbury, is closed in both directions following a serious collision involving military vehicles. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11.00 British Summer Time. An air ambulance had been called to attend to the scene of the accident. The highway was closed for several hours.

According to an eye-witness, Charlotte Aggett, one military vehicle, which was part of a convoy, overturned while another vehicle crossed the central reservation. Aggett told the media that “four military vehicles were convoying very close together and as vehicles tried to join the road, one of the military vehicles flipped as it turned and rolled twice. Another of the convoys went over the central reservation trying to avoid the collision, causing another collision on the other side of the road.”

The Ministry of Defence stated that they were aware of an incident involving two military vehicles. However, they declined to comment further. Meanwhile, Hampshire police stated that the man in his 20s had suffered a severe leg injury having been involved in the accident and had been taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

The A34 road was closed for several hours following the incident and is expected to remain closed for some time. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes
