A police officer with the Metropolitan Police in London has pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct in public office after allegedly stealing £115 from a dead man’s wallet following his sudden death. 51-year-old Craig Carter was responsible for gathering evidence related to the death of Italian filmmaker and actor Claudio Gaetani, who collapsed and died while cycling to a house in Hornsey where he was staying with friends. When Carter took responsibility for Gaetani’s wallet, he proceeded to take money from it, falling “woefully short” of the public’s expectations of a police officer, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
During a hearing at Wood Green Crown Court, Judge Daniel Fugallo told Carter that he should expect a custodial sentence for his actions, with his final sentencing to be held at the same court in September. Carter, who resides in Harlow, Essex, was later granted bail.
A spokesman for the CPS stated: “It is not only disturbing, but deeply disrespectful to the victim’s family. Our thoughts remain with them at this time.” Meanwhile, Det Supt Marco Bardetti, from North Area, added: “The Met is not an organization that will tolerate such behavior.”
The evidence against Carter was substantial, and he admitted to stealing the money during his hearing. The victim’s family should not have to make a complaint against an officer, suspecting that they have taken money, Bardetti went on to say. Carter’s actions were not only unacceptable but show a total disregard for his position as a police officer
