NHS and care regulator 'not fit for purpose'

The UK’s Care Quality Commission (CQC) is “not fit for purpose,” according to Health Secretary Wes Streeting. The assertion came after an independent review found “significant failings” at the regulator. Inspectors with insufficient experience, inspectors with neither training nor experience in appropriate fields, and inconsistencies in assessments of different services were among the failings highlighted.

The CQC inspects various health facilities and services, including hospitals, GP practices, care homes, and dental surgeries. There are roughly 90,000 such services across the country. Streeting has introduced a series of emergency measures following the review.

The commission itself has accepted the review’s findings and is appointing an interim CEO, Kate Terroni. Dr. Penny Dash, who chairs the board overseeing health and care in northwest London led the review, and has interviewed more than 200 NHS staffers and carers, as well as over 50 CQC employees. Her final report will be issued in the fall
