A 24-year-old man named Anthony Esan has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of a British Army soldier in Chatham, Kent. The attack took place on Tuesday evening and the soldier, who has not been identified, is currently in serious but stable condition in hospital. Esan was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and is due to appear in court on July 25th.
The assault occurred near the soldier’s home, which is close to Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment. Esan was arrested later that same evening in Mooring Road, Rochester, near Chatham.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his support for the soldier and his family, as well as the country’s armed forces, during a House of Commons session. He wished the soldier a speedy recovery.
