Keanu Reeves has opened up about a severe injury sustained while filming a scene for Aziz Ansari’s new comedy, Good Fortune. Reeves had been shooting a cold plunge scene with fellow actors Seth Rogen and Ansari when he tripped and fractured his kneecap. The accident happened on set, during the latter half of the filming schedule. Reeves expressed his love for the scene and it’s icy-cold setting but lamented the fact that he was injured.
Reeves, who stars alongside Sandra Oh, Keke Palmer, and others in the film, was seen later on with crutches and an ice pack around his left knee. Speaking recently on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor gave an account of events. Reeves explained that as he shuffled around the protective rug in the room, his foot got caught in a little pocket, and he fell. While his arms came out to cushion the impact when Reeves’ left knee failed him and he landed with a thud. “My patella – kneecap – cracked like a potato chip,” Reeves shared with Colbert.
Despite the injury, the star doesn’t consider it to be the worst that he has encountered. Other injuries include “motorcycle accidents, racquetball,” he told Colbert on the show. A prior surgery posed a greater threat to his physical health. Reeves shared that he had undergone a two-level fusion of his spine just before he began training for The Matrix. He had been losing feeling and coordination, and the doctor had recommended emergency surgery. The actor wore a harness for his neck to help his spine fuse properly, and this resulted in rescheduling some fight scenes.
Recently, Reeves has spoken candidly to the media about the thoughts of mortality and death he is having, as he approaches his 60th birthday. “I’m 59, so I’m thinking about death all the time”, he confessed to the BBC’s Newsbeat. Reeves doesn’t view contemplating death as a negative, however, he thinks of it as “…sensitising us to an appreciation of the breath we have and the relationships that we have the potential to have.”
