£25.49Olivia Rodrigo has taken to social media to express her support for the possible candidacy of Kamala Harris as the next US President due to her unwavering stance on reproductive rights. On July 24, Rodrigo posted a video on her Instagram stories featuring a criticism made by Harris of former President Donald Trump because of his views against abortion. In the video, Harris states that “we who believe in reproductive freedom will stop Donald Trump’s extreme abortion bans because we trust women to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.”
Rodrigo has been an advocate for reproductive rights since she first started her career. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022, Rodrigo expressed her disappointment and anger. She said that “our bodies should never be in the hands of politicians. I hope we can raise our voices to protect our right, to have a safe abortion, which is a right that so many people before us have worked so hard to get.” Since then, she announced plans to distribute free Plan B and condoms at her concerts, with a portion of the tour proceeds going to the National Network of Abortion Funds.
However, the distribution of contraceptives was halted shortly thereafter because Rodrigo’s team worried about the presence of children at her concerts. In related news, numerous celebrities, including Charli XCX and John Legend, have endorsed Kamala Harris as the ideal candidate for the next US President. Charli XCX tweeted “Kamala IS brat” and this has sparked a number of memes and generated significant media attention, with CNN even attempting to dissect it.
Rodrigo’s endorsement of Harris will undoubtedly be seen as helpful in any future Presidential campaign. Ultimately, the issue of reproductive rights is likely to play a major role in the run-up to the Presidential election, and the candidate with the strongest policies protecting women’s rights is likely to be favored. Harris’s previous actions indicate she is a strong advocate for these rights, which could sway voters in her favor
