‘Twisters’ director Lee Isaac Chung explains why kiss scene was cut from film’s climax

Director Lee Isaac Chung recently revealed that he cut a kiss scene from his film Twisters. The disaster movie, a stand-alone sequel to 1996’s Twister, stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos and centres on a group of storm chasers trying to diffuse tornadoes with sodium polyacrylate solution. In one cut of the film, Edgar-Jones and Powell’s characters share a kiss, which was previously leaked online. However, it didn’t make it into the final film.

Chung said that he liked both versions and there were many arguments made to have the kiss. However, he decided against it as Kate’s journey should achieve more than just a kiss. Chung said that he preferred Kate’s sense of purpose as a storm chaser being fulfilled, and her finding companionship and community; this, according to Chung, makes for a more suitable ending.

Edgar-Jones had previously said that the decision to cut the kiss was made after executive producer Steven Spielberg had given his notes. She added that she agreed that the kiss should be cut. Powell said that the film isn’t about the two of them finding love but about Kate returning to the thing she loves, which is storm chasing.

Twisters, which grossed $123million in its opening weekend, has been widely praised for its clever script, a timely ecological message, and an outstanding cast. In a five-star review of the film, NME said that it was packed full of heart, smarts, jaw-dropping effects, and an “exquisite ensemble cast.
