Prisoner absconds from HMP Leyhill sparking police hunt

A manhunt has been launched by the Avon and Somerset police after a prisoner absconded from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire. Gary Rootham, 42, who has connections to Reading and Cornwall, is on the loose. The public has been warned not to approach him but to call 999 if they spot him. Rootham was last seen by prison staff around 4:40 pm on 7 August 2020. He has a history of burglary, robbery and driving offences and was serving a sentence for the same.

Rootham was wearing a dark Nike polo shirt and dark jogging bottoms, and black trainers with white soles when he was last seen. He is about 5ft 11ins tall and has short dark brown hair and is usually clean-shaven.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the police as soon as possible.

The Avon and Somerset police have asked the public to be vigilant and report any information that may help locate Rootham. The police force also urged the public not to approach the fugitive.
