PinkPantheress, the English singer-songwriter, recently admitted in an interview with Kids Take Over that she doesn’t listen to albums, but just individual tracks. In her own words, “I don’t listen to albums. I just listen to songs. That’s why when it came to my own album, I was like, do people care about tracklisting? I couldn’t believe it. When I saw people review my album, some people were like, ‘It’s a great album, but the tracklisting doesn’t make sense.’ I’m like, just listen to the songs.”
The singer later took to Twitter to clarify her stance and to assert that there is no right or wrong way to consume or create music. “It’s people trying to say there is that stops people from enjoying + creating art in whichever form they want. Who cares if I listen to albums in full lol? It’s music, it’s meant to be unique to everyone,” she said.
In another interview, PinkPantheress teased that she plans to release new music soon. Speaking about her forthcoming new album, she said, “I think it’s more colourful. I think my music you would put in the grey colour wheel if I had to give it a colour. I feel like I want it to be more colourful.”
This isn’t the first time the singer has made headlines for her unconventional approach to music. PinkPantheress believes that songs should be no longer than two-and-a-half minutes, saying, “A song doesn’t need to be longer than two minutes 30, in my opinion. We don’t need to repeat a verse, we don’t need to have a bridge, we don’t need it. We don’t need a long outro.”
Her debut album, Heaven Knows, released in November 2021, includes the longest song of her career, “Capable Of Love,” which runs for three minutes and 43 seconds. According to NME, most songs on the record are between two and three minutes. By comparison, her 2021 mixtape, ‘To Hell With It,’ includes 10 songs, of which only three are longer than two minutes.
Dionne Warwick, the music icon, has since taken to social media to express her disagreement with PinkPantheress. Warwick believes that having a bridge in a song is essential, stating that it allows a song to breathe. Despite the criticism and controversies, PinkPantheress remains one of the most unique voices in contemporary pop music
