The highly anticipated movie, “Twisters”, released in UK cinemas on July 17th and is set for a worldwide box office success according to predictions. The movie is scheduled to be released in the US on Friday. According to Variety, based on the movie’s early takings from international territories, it is predicted to bring in an estimated $50 million (£38 million) from North American theatres in its first weekend.
Twisters’ predecessor, the 1996 movie “Twister,” opened with a substantial $41 million, becoming the second highest-grossing film of 1996 after Independence Day. However, “Twisters” cost $155 million to produce, so it will require a significant return from the box office though the movie’s early signs show success.
The movie has a star-studded ensemble cast which includes Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell as two oppositional characters who are in thrall to the megastorms until they find themselves in a life-threatening situation in rural Oklahoma. The movie was helmed by acclaimed director Lee Isaac Chung, and the trailer premiered during the prestigious Super Bowl halftime show.
In a five-star review of the film, NME wrote: “Every cent of that $200m budget is visible in a series of dizzying set-pieces that surely amount to the most entertaining film of the year.” The movie is also said to have a timely ecological message as the devastation wreaked by the freaky weather is evocatively explored.
Leading up to the film’s release, it has faced a whirlwind of surprise appearances at its premiere events. At one event in London, Tom Cruise showed up, while enraged PETA activists stormed the stage at another in Los Angeles. Additionally, the late Bill Paxton’s son James appears in a cameo in the film as a “disgruntled hotel guest”, which has been dubbed an Easter egg for fans of the original movie
