BLOG: Hillsborough Law means campaigners long fight for the truth was not in vain

The inclusion of the Hillsborough Law in the King’s Speech has been hailed by Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, as a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. The law, which is set to be enacted in the near future, represents a major victory for the families of those who died in 1989 and spent decades fighting for justice that was repeatedly obstructed by the individuals in positions of authority who sought to bury the truth.

The Hillsborough Law is specifically designed to empower the average citizen to challenge figures in authority who fail to carry out their duties. The act will establish the fabrication of falsehoods to the British public as a criminal offense while providing support to those pursuing accountability. This law aims to redress the balance of justice in our country and prevent public organizations from concealing their actions by instituting legal accountability.

Cllr Robinson notes that the law is a substantial step forward in ensuring that public institutions are genuinely responsible for their conduct, without allowing cover-ups and secrecy.

Moreover, he commends the Hillsborough families, survivors, campaigners, and the citizens of Liverpool who tirelessly campaigned and lobbied for this outcome. The council leader goes on to put forward a motion in the next Council Meeting on July 24th to put on the record the council’s appreciation for decades of devotion, bravery, and unity shown by the Hillsborough constituents and the people of Liverpool.

Cllr Robinson further adds that the determination shown by the Hillsborough families and survivors to ensure that the truth came out will prevent others from enduring the same trials they faced and that their lengthy battle was not in vain
