Following Gareth Southgate’s resignation from his position as England manager, Prince William has praised him as an “all-round class act”. The Prince of Wales thanked Southgate “not as the president of the FA, but as an England fan”. In a statement, Prince William described how “humility, compassion and true leadership” were demonstrated by Southgate under intense scrutiny and pressure throughout his tenure leading the England men’s football team. The outgoing boss departed following England’s loss against Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday.
Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, added that Southgate had “shouldered the dreams of the country with dignity and honour” in a public display of gratitude for his efforts and contributions towards England’s performance in recent years. Sir Keir also cited the team’s run to the World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the wins over Germany and Denmark at Wembley in 2021 as strong examples of what Southgate had achieved.
In Berlin for the Euro 2024 final, Prince William personally shook hands with England captain Harry Kane following the match, and on writing his response later that evening, stated, “This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you.”
Southgate had been England’s head coach for eight years before his resignation. His contract was set to expire later this year
