On Saturday, an assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump occurred, which has led to global condemnation. There has been an outpouring of shock from UK politicians, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressing his appallment while Conservative leader Rishi Sunak voicing his horror on social media. The suspect has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, and one man was killed while two others were critically injured. This is considered the most serious attempt on a president or presidential candidate’s life since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. The shooting is being treated by US authorities as an assassination attempt.
Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, sister of murdered MP Jo Cox, also expressed deep shock and disturbance at the attack while Trump’s ally Nigel Farage was not shocked but did state that he was very upset about the incident. Farage campaigns regularly with the former president and expressed great joy about Trump escaping an assassination attempt, while also stating that it was an absolutely horrendous incident. The White House has confirmed that the president was briefed on the attack and spoke to Mr. Trump several hours after the shooting. President Biden has condemned the shooting, stating that there is no place in America for this type of violence.
The condemnation has not stopped at the UK, with foreign secretary David Lammy adding his own condemnation of the attack as well. Boris Johnson, former Tory PM, commented on the incident, stating that it was a miracle that the former president escaped the attempt on his life. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey also tweeted about the incident, expressing his opposition to political violence and his condemnation of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life.
Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, Lucy Powell, Labour MP and leader of the House of Commons, called the attack appalling and extended the UK’s thoughts to the US, condemning the horrific incident completely and fulsomely. Similarly, Tory leader Rishi Sunak condemned the violence and intimidation that must not prevail while MP Kim Leadbetter exhorted the need for a conversation on civilised democracy and noted that everyone has a responsibility for the words that come out of their mouths. Ultimately, there has been complete worldwide condemnation of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump
