Actress Shannen Doherty, who is best known for her roles in shows such as Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210, has passed away at the age of 53. Her publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed that Doherty died on July 13 after fighting breast cancer for nine years. She was surrounded by loved ones, including her dog Bowie.

Doherty’s cancer diagnosis was first revealed in 2015, and despite an initial phase of remission, she revealed in 2017 that the cancer had returned. Last year, court documents referred to Doherty’s illness as “terminal”.

On her podcast ‘Let’s Be Clear’, Doherty revealed only last month that she was to undergo surgery and start a new treatment protocol, as regular treatment had stopped working. “Your cancer cells adapt — the molecular makeup of them changes and then you have to go into a different protocol,” she said.

Doherty’s career began at a young age, beginning with voice work on the 1982 animated film The Secret of NIMH. She later took a supporting role in the film Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Her breakout role came in 1990 in Beverly Hills, 90210, which saw her take on a lead role with Jason Priestley.

Her most notable project was Charmed, which propelled her career further. Although Doherty only starred in the first three seasons of the show, it remains a fan favourite. Since leaving the show, Doherty has mainly starred in made-for-TV films and television series. Her most recent on-screen appearance was in the action film Darkness of Man, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and was released in May.

In addition to acting, Doherty was also active as a podcaster. She co-hosted the podcast ‘House of Halliwell’ with her former Charmed co-stars, Holly Marie Combs, Brian Krause and Drew Fuller. Doherty also issued the first “reboot” episode of the podcast only last Wednesday, after a period of inactivity
