A tragic house fire in East London has claimed the lives of two children, according to a statement from the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The blaze began early on Saturday morning, spreading throughout the ground and first floors of a terraced property on Napier Road in East Ham. Five people were hospitalized due to the incident, including four children and one adult. The two fatalities were children, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene and the other of whom subsequently died in hospital.
Patrick Goulbourne, an Assistant Commissioner of the LFB, spoke of his sadness at the loss of life: “It is extremely upsetting that despite the best efforts of our crews, somebody has died. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.” The spokesperson added that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Rokhsana Fiaz, the Newham mayor, expressed her condolences to those affected by the tragedy. “It is just an unimaginable loss and my heart goes out to the parents,” she said on social media. “My prayers for the two children who have died. Also prayers for the surviving family members, two adults and two other children.” Fiaz went on to pledge that the council would offer full support to the affected family.
The LFB have not yet released details on the identities of the children, who have not yet been named.
