Hilit Kolet releases ‘Snap Talk’ EP via Rekids

London-based DJ Hilit Kolet has released her EP “Snap Talk” via record label Rekids. The two-track EP features a blend of house and techno with Brazilian baile funk rhythms, which pays tribute to her time as a samba dancer. The lead track of the EP, titled “Snap Talk”, features spoken-word vocals from fellow Rekids artist Kameelah Waheed, alongside a powerful house production. Meanwhile, “Gate 33” is a drum-heavy track that combines tight-looped percussives with favela funk-patterned cowbells and airport announcement samples.

Kolet explained that the EP was largely inspired by her previous experiences as a samba dancer for London’s Notting Hill Carnival. “I do miss the sheer euphoria of finishing a full-on, sweaty dance practice to the sounds of the bateria”, she said, referring to the percussion orchestra that accompanies dancers during samba parades. Despite her love for baile funk rhythms, Kolet eventually gave up samba dancing to pursue her career as a DJ.

Kolet went on to describe the creation process of the EP, noting that she wanted to incorporate favela funk patterns into a “fierce house/techno beat”. “At one point I felt like I was coming up with a new subgenre”, she said. “I don’t know if I can quite claim that yet, but it definitely sounds good on the dancefloor!” The “Snap Talk” EP is now available to listen to on streaming platforms.

Niamh Ingram, Mixmag’s weekend editor, covered the release and praised the EP as a “compulsive” blend of genres. Ingram teaches her readers where to find the EP, highlights some of the record’s main elements, and summarizes Kolet’s experience as a samba dancer.
