Netflix horror hit ‘The Platform’ is getting a sequel this year

The Pit is back and more ominous than ever as Netflix confirms the sequel to the 2020 Spanish horror-thriller The Platform will be available on the streaming service from 4 October 2021. Milena Smit, star of The Snow Girl, plays the leading role in the sequel, titled The Platform 2.

The dystopian and satirical detention centre, known as The Pit, returns for the sequel following on from the viral success of the original. Inmates occupying each level of The Pit have to eke out a living on a daily dietary intake that is lowered from the top, creating tension and layers of dystopia.

The first few months of the pandemic saw The Platform go viral thanks to its prescient themes and thought-provoking message. Speaking on The Platform’s social message, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia commented that while it was critical of many political ideologies, it “was not strictly about capitalism”. Gaztelu-Urrutia went onto state that even “when you try to demand everyone’s collaboration, there is no big achievement by the end. Goreng does what he sets out to do in bringing the panna cotta and the child down to the lowest level, but he didn’t change anyone’s mind about sharing the food.”

The synopsis for the new film reads: “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”
