98% of young musicians in Northern England never had chance to perform live, study reveals

The latest study conducted by Youth Music named Sound of the Next Generation (SONG) has highlighted a significant gap in opportunities available to young musicians in the North and South of England. The findings brought to light that 98% of young artists living in the North of England have never performed at local music venues. The report also showed that budding musicians in the North seem themselves as “less musical” compared to their counterparts in the South, which is due to the lack of support, funding, and opportunities.

Just 52% of young people in Northern England consider themselves musical, whereas, 62% of those in the South see themselves as talented musicians. Though CEO of Youth Music, Matt Griffiths, has stressed that the North is not lacking in musical and creative talent, grassroots organizations are struggling to survive and are not able to plan for the long term. Youth Music is encouraging the new Labor Government to support aspiring musicians through their Roots for Grassroots initiative.

The study garnered insights from 2,100 young people across the UK and highlighted that a significant divide exists in the support provided to the music industries in the North and South. The findings showed that almost 18% of young people in Northern England felt unsupported in the music industry and were less likely to play an instrument, compared to those living in London.

It is integral that the new government invests in infrastructure and workforce, ensuring young people have a safe and creative environment across the country. Youth Music underscores the importance of providing adequate funding to grass-root organizations to help them plan beyond the short term and support aspiring musical talent.
